They weren’t to blame, but they took responsibility.

Years after a dark chapter in its history, a school district faced a public reckoning for harm done to students long ago. The abuse had occurred decades earlier and no current staff had been involved—but the responsibility to acknowledge, address and move forward rested squarely with today’s leadership.

Mower partnered with the district to help strike the right tone: one of accountability without defensiveness. We supported the rollout of consistent messaging that updated the community on settlements, student services and ongoing commitments to healing and prevention.

Importantly, core programs for students and staff remained intact. The district made it clear that while the past couldn’t be undone, it would not define the future. Messages were tailored for internal audiences, families, local leaders and the media—each with the clarity and compassion the situation demanded.

The result was not a reversal of harm—but a restoration of trust. The district didn’t try to rewrite history. It focused on writing a better future.
