Syracuse University Honors Eric and Judith Mower for Civic Achievements

Syracuse University has named Eric Mower, chairman and CEO of Eric Mower + Associates, and his wife, Judith Cotey Mower, as recipients of the 2012 Orange Circle Award. The award recognizes members of the SU community who have done extraordinary things in the service of others.

On April 10, the university will honor three alums and one student group who are making a difference on and off the Syracuse campus. This year’s award is one of the highlights of Philanthropy Week at Syracuse University, which celebrates the vital role philanthropy plays in society.

“Eric and Judy mean so much to SU and the Central New York community,” says SU Chancellor and President Nancy Cantor. “They met at SU and have always been deeply engaged with us in every way—from philanthropy with the Newhouse School, to teaching and mentoring Newhouse and Maxwell students, to leadership as Trustees. Most importantly, they are both quintessential difference makers—sharing their wide ranging talents to galvanize expertise across the community to strengthen our social infrastructure through the arts and civil society organizations. We could not be more proud to call them our own.” 

For the last 44 years, Mr. Mower has guided EMA from its original staff of four to nearly 250 in seven offices. The agency’s billings increased from less than $1 million in 1968 to estimated 2012 capitalized billings approaching $225 million. Nationally, EMA is consistently recognized among the top agencies by leading industry trade publications. Most recently, EMA was named one of the top five best agencies to work for by Advertising Age.

Mr. Mower is actively involved with the University, and a number of civic and community causes. He serves as vice chair of the Business Council of New York State, and director for the Syracuse Metropolitan Development Foundation and Syracuse 20/20. He has served as board member and chair of the Syracuse Chamber, and, in recent years, as the founding chair of The Syracuse Neighborhood Initiative and the founding chair of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor Commission.

Mr. Mower has been involved with the American Association of Advertising Agencies (4A’s) for nearly 30 years, serving as director-at-large, national secretary/treasurer, chair of the Eastern Region Board of Governors, and chair of the New York State Council. He is the 14-year chair of the 4A’s Government Relations Committee, guiding state and federal legislation affecting the industry. For nearly 10 years, Mr. Mower has served on the board of the National Advertising Review Council, the industry’s self-regulatory body, which he has chaired since 2008. He is also a past president of the Paris-based International Network of Advertising Agencies (IN).

Mr. Mower is a trustee emeritus for the University after serving as a trustee for 16 years, and he serves on the Advisory Council of the Newhouse School. Previously, he served as vice chair of the University Board of Trustees, a member of the executive committee, and chairman of the board’s academic affairs and facilities committees.

Dr. Judith Mower was president of J. C. Mower Consultants until her retirement in 2010, and had been an independent organizational development consultant since 1978. She has 25 years’ experience as an organizational development consultant, helping more than 90 organizations with leadership development, quality improvement and strategic planning.

Mrs. Mower has served on the boards of and held leadership positions within more than two dozen local and state nonprofits, as well as founder or co-founder of numerous local nonprofit organizations. She currently serves on the boards of FOCUS Greater Syracuse, Parks and Trails New York, and Syracuse 20/20, and is vice chair of the Syracuse Say Yes to Education Leadership Council.

Mrs. Mower has been an adjunct instructor at SU in both the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs and the Whitman School of Management. As a University trustee, she serves on the board’s academic affairs and student affairs committees, as well as on the Library Advisory Board.
