Sustainability Report for Domtar Wins CSR Award from PR News

CHARLOTTE, N.C. Domtar’s 2015 Sustainability Report,“Our world, connected.” received the top recognition in the Sustainability/CSR Report category at the annual PR News CSR Awards held recently at The National Press Club in Washington, D.C. Eric Mower + Associates worked alongside a core internal team at Domtar to develop and design the new look for the report.

Domtar is using the 2015 report as a primary mechanism to discuss emerging opportunities and risks in the world around them. The document highlights how Domtar’s values of agility, caring and innovation come to life. While Domtar has been publishing sustainability reports dating back 10 years, its 2015 report was prepared with a fresh look and voice that reflects its sustainability leadership. Being relevant, readable and memorable were the goals set for making the report a success.

To achieve a fresh look, EMA added more visuals and infographics, organized the report into eight clearly-defined subject areas, and included sustainability stories from suppliers, employees, community members and customers.

Along with designing the report in multiple formats, translating the copy to French, and sharing it across numerous platforms, EMA’s contributions on Domtar’s 2015 Sustainability Report helped them beat out 10 other finalists for the award—including reports from Nestlé in the United States, Pacific Gas and Electric, and Viacom.

PR News’ CSR Awards showcase the industry’s most powerful, impactful social responsibility and green campaigns, and finalists in the competition set new standards of excellence for other organizations to follow. A blue chip panel of corporate, agency and academic executives judges CSR Award entries—in conjunction with PR News staff—and evaluates the entries based on creativity, innovation, sound planning, implementation and outcomes.

Ultimately, proven success in aligning strategic objectives with end goals is the most important criterion. Words such as, “authentic,” “makes me proud to work for Domtar,” “sustainability doesn’t have to be so complicated,” “easy to read,” “conversational” and “inviting” are just some of the terms used by Domtar employees and customers to describe its 2015 report. This feedback and the final report itself, showed judges that Domtar and EMA were truly able to achieve their goals of making the report relevant, readable and memorable.

Domtar’s 2015 Sustainability Report: “Our world, connected” was also awarded an Honorable Mention from Ragan Communications PR Daily’s 2015 Corporate Social Responsibility Awards for the category: Report (Annual or One-Time) (Print or Electronic). These accolades follow a number of other awards and recognitions EMA earned in 2015 for its work with Domtar, including a Merit Award from The One Show, a bronze CLIO Award and, most notably, a Silver Lion at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.
