Matthew Maguire Joins EMA as Senior Counselor in Its Public Affairs Group

Matthew Maguire, long-time director of communications for The Business Council of New York State, will join Eric Mower and Associates as a senior counselor in the agency’s public affairs group, the firm announced today.

“Matt is a true professional who has helped many organizations succeed in meeting critical communications challenges for more than a quarter century,” said Robert Bellafiore, senior partner and leader of EMA’s public affairs group. “With his years of experience serving a broad range of businesses, as well as public and private universities, Matt’s savvy counsel and experience will help EMA and its clients, not only in New York but nationally.”

Since 1998, Mr. Maguire has served as director of communications for the Business Council, New York’s largest broad-based business group. In that role, he has been spokesman for New York’s employers on a range of policy issues, as well as a counselor and strategist in shaping the Council’s communications strategies. He was also one of the first bloggers on state policy matters as founder and moderator of the widely read KnickerbockerBlog.com.

Mr. Maguire has been active as a free-lance writer and editor, writing coach, and PR consultant for a range of clients in higher education, economic development, business, and the not-for-profit sector.

Working out of EMA’s Albany office, Mr. Maguire will be responsible for senior level counsel to the agency’s public affairs and public relations clients as well as conduct media and crisis training sessions and participate in business development. EMA’s public affairs clients include manufacturers, industry groups, renewable and conventional energy companies, trade associations, hospitals, schools, advocacy groups, non-profits and more. Mr. Maguire will join EMA on February 4.

Before joining The Business Council, Mr. Maguire worked for 11 years in public relations and development at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and in public relations at Carnegie Mellon University and the University at Albany. At the beginning of his career, he was a reporter for the Knickerbocker News in Albany.

An Albany native, Mr. Maguire is a 1978 graduate of the College of St. Rose. He is an active volunteer for the Albany Police Athletic League, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and other non-profit groups. He also performs regularly as a jazz drummer with several different groups. He lives in Albany with his wife, Nancy Halpin, and their daughter, Elizabeth.

Mr. Maguire joins a growing public affairs practice that specializes in legislative and regulatory matters, community relations, energy, crisis and media training, association communications and more.

Just last week, EMA announced the acquisition of Clarke Advertising & Public Relations in Sarasota, a move that expands the reach of one of the East Coast’s largest independent agencies into Florida.
