EMA’s Tom Brede Participates on Ad Council of Rochester Panel to Help Nonprofits Hone Advocacy Skills

Tom Brede, counselor in the Public Relations + Public Affairs Group at Eric Mower + Associates, will participate in a panel discussion on how nonprofits can effectively perform advocacy for their causes in a challenging political and regulatory environment. “Advocating for Nonprofit Success,” part of the Ad Council of Rochester Academy program, takes place May 28 in Rochester, N.Y.

Impactful advocacy can often help a nonprofit organization change regulations, influence policy development, or even increase funding for a particular issue. The hour-long panel discussion will cover topics including: utilizing the right type of advocacy, understanding the legislative process, how to time advocacy efforts, relationship-building and best practices.

“Advocating for a cause involves more than just passion and people; it requires research, resources, effective communication and a realistic understanding of the environment in which you want to advocate,” said Brede. “Developing a comprehensive plan and knowing how to prepare are vital components of successful advocacy and key to carrying out your mission.”

Joining Brede on the panel are Kelly Harris, director of administration of the Alzheimer’s Association, and Larry Marx, executive director of The Children’s Agenda.

Brede has a strong background in government affairs, communications issues, and corporate citizenship planning. Prior to joining EMA, he spent seven years working for U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, including nearly three years as a senior member of the communications team. As a part of EMA’s Public Affairs team, Brede advises clients on government relations and public policy issues, provides reputation management services, and helps to promote their interests on regional, statewide and national levels.
