EMA’s Latrese Burruss Discusses the Need for Diversity in the Ad Industry on Buffalo Ad Club Panel

Latrese Burruss, account executive in the Public Relations and Public Affairs group at Eric Mower + Associates, participated Tuesday night in the Advertising Club of Buffalo's panel on “Diversity in Our Industry: How it makes for a strong workplace.”

Panelists tackled the subject of the need for diversity within the PR, advertising and marketing industries, especially at the local level. They led a lively discussion on why the lack of diversity is an issue and shared ideas on how to make the workplace stronger with a more diverse workforce.

"One idea to help break the diversity barrier is to start attracting talent earlier," said Burruss. "We should introduce students to the internship and career opportunities the industry has to offer when they are in middle school and high school rather than waiting until they reach college."

Joining Burruss on the panel were Christina Lopez, a manager of Workforce Development for the Buffalo Niagara Partnership; Patrick Finan, founder and principal of the Block Club; and Dr. Catherine Foster, APR, assistant professor of Communication Studies at Canisius College. Charles Fashana, vice president and marketing segment manager; at First Niagara Bank moderated.

Burruss is a member of EMA’s Diversity and Inclusion Council, which strives to increase awareness and maintain a diverse work environment at EMA.
