EMA’s Chris Steenstra Sizes Up Startups in Le Moyne’s ‘Dolphin Tank’

Syracuse, N.Y. Chris Steenstra, a managing partner at Eric Mower + Associates, will listen to five startups pitch their businesses and decide whether or not to accept their offers.

Steenstra has been named one of five Lead Dolphins for Dolphin Tank, a spinoff event from Le Moyne College’s Madden School of Business that is based on the hit ABC show Shark Tank. Dolphin Tank, named in honor of Le Moyne College’s dolphin mascot, is hosted in partnership with StartFast Venture Accelerator Company.

Dolphin Tank takes place on June 3 in Le Moyne’s Mitchell Hall, where five competing startup teams—chosen from 2,000 competitors—will pitch their ideas. As a Lead Dolphin, Steenstra will decide whether or not to accept an offer or strike a deal, which may include acting as a mentor, making business introductions, providing in-kind assistance, or a proposing a financial deal.

The startup teams will spend the summer working with Syracuse-area mentors and coaches like the Lead Dolphins to help prepare for their final pitch in front of more than 200 investors from around the country.

The five startups include:

  • Hoverstat provides drone-automated roof inspections to the insurance industry.
  • SmartyPans is a smart cooking pan that connects to a recipe app via mobile device.
  • Phronesis Techne’s Mogee is an iPhone keyboard app enhancing messaging through images.
  • Electronic Gaming Federation is an electronic sports company working to establish an NCAA equivalent for competitive gaming.
  • BitReady is a platform that focused on simplifying Bitcoin to bring it to the masses.

“I’m very excited to be a part of this event. Each of the five competing companies exemplify the hard work and strategic thinking this event has encouraged,” Steenstra said. “Dolphin Tank is an excellent and fun opportunity to see what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur.”

Steenstra serves on Le Moyne’s Madden Advisory Board. At EMA, she is co-leader of EMA Group B2B and managing director of EMA’s Syracuse office. She also strategizes and oversees client integrated marketing programs. Steenstra is nationally recognized by BtoB magazine as a Who’s Who in B2B Marketing. She is also a national board member for the Business Marketing Association (BMA) and sits on the New York State Committee for the 4A’s (American Association of Advertising Agencies).
