EMA Names Tom Merrick Executive Creative Director

Eric Mower + Associates has promoted Tom Merrick to executive creative director. As ECD, Merrick will take a more extensive creative leadership role across the agency, working closely with creative directors and leaders in EMA’s seven offices. He will maintain his creative leadership duties in the firm’s Buffalo, N.Y., office.

“Tom is an outstanding creative talent. Equally important, he brings great collaboration skills, seemingly limitless positive energy and a genuine humanity to both his leadership and work,” said Doug Bean, COO at EMA. “Tom has been an important part of many creative initiatives at EMA, and has earned the respect and trust of all who have had the opportunity to work with him.”

A senior partner at EMA, Merrick has worked at the agency for more than 20 years—starting as a copywriter and working his way up to creative director. The winner of numerous advertising awards, Merrick’s work has earned renown for its smart humor and ability to strike an emotional chord with audiences. Industry-leading publications including Advertising Age and Adweek have profiled his creative work.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re creating a national TV commercial or a regional radio spot,” said Merrick. “You need to connect with your audience in a relevant, human manner.”

Merrick has worked across numerous industries, including high tech, health care, retail, telecommunications, professional services, non-profits, theaters, casinos, restaurant chains, consumer goods. He has worked with brands including BlueCross Blue Shield, Motorola, Caesars Pocono Resorts, Sallie Mae, Welch Allyn, Community Bank, The Food Bank of Central New York and FedEx Kinko’s.

Merrick succeeds Michael Cunningham, a long-time EMA partner and executive creative director, who died in 2011.

A resident of Baldwinsville, N.Y., Merrick earned a bachelor’s degree from the School of Visual Arts in New York City. He is a past officer of the American Advertising Federation and has taught at Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School. Merrick was also the frontman for EMA’s former in-house band Crankdaddy, which took the national stage at Advertising Week’s 2008 Battle of the Ad Bands.
